Perry Lakes Hawks

The Perry Lakes Hawks are a basketball club from Perth, Western Australia competing in the semi-professional State Basketball League (SBL), Women's State Basketball League (WSBL) and Junior Western Australian Basketball League (WABL). Located at the Western Australian Basketball Centre since 2010, the Hawks were previously situated at the now demolished Perry Lakes Basketball Stadium.
==History==
For 47 years, the Perry Lakes Hawks Basketball Association was located at the Perry Lakes Basketball Stadium. In 1962, the Stadium was built with the original purpose being to hold the National Men's Basketball Championships, and later became WA's home of basketball. In 2010, the Western Australian Basketball Centre was completed and the Hawks moved to the new facility along with the Perth Wildcats and the West Coast Waves.〔(Time-out for Perry Lakes Stadium )〕
During the 1970s, the WA Basketball Council announced an ‘elite’ competition held on Friday nights, featuring eight teams from the prominent districts of Perth, Swan Districts, Tangney/Willetton, Subiaco, East Perth, Cockburn, Stirling and Claremont. Within the Claremont district, the origin of the Perry Lakes Hawks was created. City Beach and Scarborough were two of the Claremont district's best, and after much debate, the two merged, forming the Scarborough City Hawks. Later when other venues away from Perry Lakes Stadium were established, Scarborough City changed its name to the Perry Lakes Hawks in 1986.〔(City Beach Basketball Club - 1970, Gary Foster )〕 The new name was more geographically relevant and aligned the club with their home stadium. 1989 saw the formation of the State Basketball and WA Basketball Leagues from the previous District and Junior Competition.〔
A legend of the club is long-time Juniors Director and former Perry Lakes Stadium Manager, Mike Bussell. In the late 1960s, Mike played at the Perry Lakes Stadium in the Western Australian Basketball Federation (WABF) Metropolitan competition for a team from the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO). He later joined the City Beach Basketball Club in 1978, where he coached a number of teams and was the club treasurer at one stage. Mike joined the Scarborough City Hawks committee in 1983, before becoming the Director of Junior Competition in 1985, a position he held for over 20 years. When the club changed its name in 1986, Mike stayed on, and has since become the Hawks most notable figurehead in its history.〔 Mike is also a life member of his junior club, City Beach, his Association, Perry Lakes Hawks, and the State body, Basketball WA.〔(Hawks History – Mike Bussell )〕
The Perry Lakes Hawks men's and women's SBL teams both have very successful histories. In 1994, the men's team won their first championship, followed by the early 2000s being very successful as the Hawks went on to win the SBL championship in 2001, 2002, 2003, and 2004. Additionally, the women's team is just as successful, having won their first in 1998 before going on to win in 2001, 2002, 2003, 2007 and 2008.〔(About the Hawks )〕
